Recent tastings: A divine Amarone from Ca' Bertoldi

RECENT TASTINGS: Domaine Pichot Vouvray 2011, $11.99. If you’ve never tasted Vouvray, this is a nice way to break the ice. It is among my favorite French varietals: Straw colored, aromatic, clean, peachy and refreshing. Any white fish will do … Zolo (Unoaked) Chardonnay 2010, $11.99. Very fresh mouthfeel with intense apple and pear taste. Love the crisp finish … Chateau Bellegrave Medoc 2010, $14. OK, it’s not the top of the line Bordeaux-style blend but here’s the thing, it’s rich on the palate and exits dry, smooth and long on the back end. A Binends (Braintree) bargain … Ottone I Piemonte DOC Barbera, $8.99. That is no typo on the price and if you enjoy dry, red Italian wines that say, “Hail Caesar!,” go down to Tutto Bene in Lowell and buy a case. Try this with a big, thick sausage pizza … Fish House Sauvignon Blanc 2011, $12. A Columbia Valley wine that failed to inspire. It was watery thin. Avoid … Recchia Ca’ Bertoldi Amarone 2005, $39. Heaven in a bottle, especially with a big, juicy steak off the grill. Think raisins, walnuts, cherry, velvety tannins and bone dryness on the finish. A life’s true pleasure.
