A nice old-style European wine bottle from Jacuzzi Family Vineyards, Sonoma.

I visited the Jacuzzi Family Winery in Sonoma with my wife in October and I was intrigued by the beautiful grounds, but nothing attracted my attention more than this bottle, its shape, color and wonderful label. Talk about marketing, this bottle reminded me of the days my Uncle Frank and Dad crushing grapes in the cellar of our home in Providence, R.I., in the late 1950s and early 1960s. They were making a truly home-brewed wine that often turned out blood red and overloaded with alcohol. One year they had to throw it all away, the amateur vintners dashed in their pursuit of making the perfect Chianti. But usually every Christmas they created a batch of red wine that was highly acceptable and drinkable for family and friends. They served it on the Feast of the Seven Fishes, the Christmas Eve dinner which Italian-Americans celebrate before midnight Mass. The walk to St. Agnes Church was wobbly, but in great cheer. Back to the Seven Brothers label on the Jacuzzi bottle. See them sitting around the table, eating and drinking in delight? I had to taste what was inside this bottle. I had to experience it. I really didn’t know how. So before I popped the cork, I vowed to learn a little about the grape, the winemaking technique, and how to appreciate this Merlot with food. And that my friends is what this blog is all about. I’m not an expert and I don’t know if I ever will be or want to be. Learning about wine is the adventure I am taking. You are welcome to come along, sip by sip and bottle by bottle. Let’s explore together, compare notes, and enjoy. See you at my next post.
